The bosses at the Coppergate Centre in York are bucking the trend for closing shops in York city centre, announcing that they now have full occupation of all of the units, with the opening of the new Pavers store at the top of Coppergate Walk and a new bubble tea outlet.
The final unit to be let is the former change kiosk within St Mary’s Square, which has opened as Hubble Bubble Tea, having been used in recent months as a screening space for the Royal Wedding, and a selfie booth for YO1 Radio’s Christmas charity fundraising.
“We have something special down at the Coppergate Centre, with a great mix of cultural attractions – JORVIK Viking Centre, St Mary’s Church and Fairfax House – retail which appeals to the widest range of shoppers, from luxury brands to affordable fashion, and food and drink with indoors and alfresco dining available to suit the changing seasons,” explains Coppergate centre manager, Pippa Unwin. “Perhaps most significantly, as we have no pubs or bars, this is not an area frequented by stag and hen parties, which means that it is still very family friendly even at the busiest times of the weekend, and with on-site parking and buses stopping right outside Primark on Parliament Street, it is accessible to residents and tourists alike.”
Without doubt, the Coppergate Centre has benefited from the re-opening of JORVIK Viking Centre last April, but it has become an attraction in its own right thanks to the suspended umbrellas which have become a must-see for tourists and the Instagram generation. “The umbrellas add a lovely touch of colour throughout the year, and with our winter lights taking over from November to February, this is a tremendously welcoming part of the city centre,” adds Pippa. “We had a great fortnight for screening Wimbledon, too, with the hot weather making our deckchairs a highly attractive space to relax during a city centre visit – and artificial turf means that the lawn doesn’t have the parched appearance that turned every bit of real grass brown!”
On bank holiday Monday, Coppergate drew the crowds for the launch onto FM of local radio station, YO1 Radio, with an enthusiastic reception to performances by York party bank, the Superlicks.
