York Food Festival hits city centre tomorrow

One of the best things about living in York is, of course, the food.

Yorkshire has so much to boast about when it comes to tasty treats – from local produce to international food and drink. And this year, the famous (free!) York Food Festival is turning up the heat.

Here are a few things you can expect to find…

  • Spark is York’s newest community of independent businesses, including cafes, street food outlets, and bars. Made from brightly coloured shipping containers, Spark will be hosting some of the Taste Workshops on offer. These workshops will look at new ways to taste, and learn how to make good food.
  • Got a sweet tooth? York’s new Cocoa Works is on hand to guide you through the production of single variety chocolates.
  • Local charity YUMI will be working with Syrian refugees, showcasing their national cuisine.
  • New for 2018 is the Food Factory. For just £15 your family can learn to make bread, butter, pasta, and cheese – and more.
  • The Star Inn the Square is a pop-up bar and food area, run by regional celebrity chef Andrew Pern.
  • What kind of food festival would be complete without a beer tent? But it’s no ordinary beer tent – this one features live music as the evenings draw in.

The Festival is run by an independent organisation, and intends on making a long-term difference to York. School events are held mid-week with local children taking part in cookery lessons, and a Junior Chefs Competition will also be underway.

Michael Hjort, a leading local chef and Festival director, says: “There’s a massive opportunity to buy regional or other gourmet foods. We’re very proud of this – many festivals are dominated by the beer tents and street food. The Festival is not just in York but is about York.”

But, if you just want to nibble on something sweet, you can have your cake and eat it. The Festival runs on the same week as MacMillan’s Coffee Morning – so 25% of the sales from the coffee and cake stand will go to a great cause.
