Summer Holiday Panic: Drag the Kids Out

20 July 2017

What should you do with the kids?

With a lot of schools finishing for summer this week or next, I’m ready and braced for fear of imminent doom a.k.a. the summer holidays. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: don’t waste this time!

I’m not going to sit and preach about how this is a great time to get to know your kids, one-on-one time, etc., because frankly what do I know? I don’t have kids. But what I do have is a very specific set of skills. (Just kidding).

What I think is a great opportunity through the summer holidays is to do all the things that kids do but take yours too, so you have a good (believable) excuse for doing the things!

If you’re looking for inspiration, here’s a few suggestions:

Summer Fun Activities at Piglets Adventure Farm Park, Towthorpe Grange, 22 July - 4 September. Enjoy fun at the farm, at Piglets this summer. Bob in the bubbles at the Foam on the Farm attraction - but don't get hit by the foam cannon! Follow the fairy trail through the enchanted woodland, see the Magic Hatter's colourful comedy tricks, Fatt Matt's death-defying stunts under the big top, get the full pig racing experience, find your way out of the maize maze, play in the bale play farm and that's not even all that's going on this summer! Info here.

Family Fun Day, with the MS Society,  Saturday 22 July, on the village green, New Earswick. Sure to be a great day out for the whole family with donation buckets galore, bouncy castles, climbing wall, obstacle course, soft-play areas, face painting, hair braiding, short tennis, tombola’s, raffles and more, info here.

The Tales of Tipsy Willow Tree at Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, 22 July - 26 August. Get the little ones to help Tipsy Willow Tree find her lost magic! And, after all, what good is a fairy with no magic? You'll meet goblins, giants and all kind of magical people on your journey. Details here.

Super 'Hero' Day at Flamingo Land Resort & Zoo, Malton, Sunday 23 July. Lingo Land's Hero ride turns 4 years' old this weekend. There'll be every man and his dog's favourite hero’s there, and dressing up the little ones enters you into a prize draw for a luxury stay on-site, info here.

Mess Around York at the Poppleton Centre, Tuesday 25 July. Forget the beach, Mess Around York have got the beach in their backyard! Make all the mess you want (or 'til simply can't anymore), enjoy goldfish jelly and ice cream, too. Mums, dads, boys and girls, all you need is to come along, mess around, and the team'll clear it all up after! If that's not therapeutic, I don't know what is. Info here.

Junior Experience Day at the Deep, Hull, Tuesday 25 July. If your child has a passion for marine animals - or, you know, you do and want to have a look - then get them over to the Deep, as their hugely popular Junior Experience Day is coming back around! Tour the cool seas plant room and the Turtle display preparation area, clear and clean the areas and even take part in feeding some of the critters! You won't want to miss this day of marine-themed fun, details here.

Fairy Stories in the Garden at Scampston Hall, Scampston, Wednesday 26 July. All children in magical costumes will gain free entry, so why not go the full hog and do it too? There’s no doubt a story telling walk, exploring the magic of Scampston’s woods and more will be made more magical with your own wings, info here.

Summer Holidays Pirates & Mermaids at Mother Shipton's Cave, 26 July - 8 August. Head up to the cave for a 'swashbuckling' adventure (their word, not mine), get involved with perishing pirates, marvellous mermaids and search out the secret lost treasure! But whatever you do, don't fall into the watery depths of Davy Jones' locker! More info here.

St. Nick's Nature Explorers at St. Nick's Environment Centre, Rawdon Avenue, Thursday 27 July. I don't know if children have changed, but when I was little all I wanted was to get in the pond with all the ducks, so this sounds IDEAL for child-me. Get the little gobs involved with nature through hands-on activities - get 'em right in there. Try pond dipping (OMG), minibeast hunts, building birdhouses and more! More information here.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe: 2 Day Drama Workshop at Helmsley Arts Centre, Thursday 27 - Friday 28 July. Step through the theatre wardrobe and into a fun-filled, action-packed two-day drama workshop exploring favourite characters and classic scenes from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe! Your family and friends can even see your magical performance afterwards... Info here.

Dangerous Arts at the Royal Armouries, Leeds, 29 July - 3 September. Your kids might not like history, but they sure will after visiting the Royal Armouries. I know as I was the same at 18 years' old, and have been back many a time to experience it. Show 'em how history can be brought to life with the life-action combat demos, have-a-go sessions, performances, tours, and more. I mean, what's cooler than learning how to swordfight? Details here.

Wind in the Willows Outdoor Theatre at RHS Harlow Carr, Harrogate, 28 July. This outdoor performance is sure to capture your little ones' eye, with Immersion Theatre providing the fun and frolicks, while you provide the children, picnic, and rugs. Join the boat-loving Ratty, the sensible yet curious Mole, wise old Badger and the fantastically irrepressible Toad as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime culminating in a colourful battle with the sly weasel to save Toad Hall! Info here.

Little Diggers: Norse Myths and Stories at DIG, Saint Saviourgate, Saturday 29 July. Discover York's history from a new angle... The child-size angle, looking up from DIG's story-telling mat! Enjoy a visit from a Nordic stald (storyteller), have a go at some mystical crafts and explore the characters, gods and mystic Viking sagas. Info here.
