Skills for life

First passes for training initiative launched by York Housing Association

Four of York's lovely residents are filled to the brim with pride after becoming the first in the city to benefit from a new initiative to help people with learning difficulties to lead more independent lives. The 16 week course covers a range of topics including household chores, personal finances, cooking and healthy eating, personal care and accessing health care services.

Launched by the York Housing Association, the Life Skills training course sees the first four students passing with flying colours. Karl Mercer, Mathew Glassbrook, Nick Bedford and Lewis Wilkinson, who all live in supported housing on Heslington Road, were presented with their certificates by Julia Histon, Chief Executive of York Housing Association.

Julia said, "The courses are aimed at enabling people who have learning difficulties or mental health problems to lead a more independent lifestyle."
