Digging for Victory!

The York 800 programme has a fantastic treat for York residents this week.

The first archaeological digs in the Guildhall yard, the south side of the Guildhall, the Mansion House, andCommon Hall Lanehave begun in earnest.

As Part of York's Medieval Summer, members of the public have the brilliant opportunity to see the dig and meet members of York Archaeological Trust and the archaeologists themselves from 6th-10th August. They will also be able to have a sneak peek at any recent finds as they are documented and before they are displayed in the Mansion House. Not only this, but visitors can see the vertical survey and imaging of the Guildhall recently carried out by the Trust.

The archeologists have a lot of work on their hands this time. The digs not only aim to establish the basement dates of the Mansion House but the land levels surrounding the Guildhall and the river frontages which could hold well preserved waterlogged deposits. There is also the potential to dig-up structures that existed in the Guildhall yard and adjoining areas such as kitchens, stables and even a brew house.

Councillor Sonja Crisp, City of York Council Cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: "In this year of York 800, it seems very fitting that we can host a dig at the principal seat of local democracy in the city. I'm very excited at the prospects of what might be found on the site."

Pre-booking for this exciting opportunity is essential. Call 01904 615505 to book your place.
